Discussion Questions

1) This is a key passage on the doctrine of the priesthood of all believers. Based on what’s
expressed stated and its context, what does this tell us about the doctrine?
2) In some church traditions, the priesthood of all believers is used as the basis for church
practices such as “open worship” and congregational rule. Based on your observations from
the previous question, to what extent would that doctrine apply to those practices? In what
ways may is it being applied beyond the parameters of the text in context?
3) Since our privilege and function as God’s spiritual temple and holy priesthood (v. 5) is being
used as further motivation to live out the five applications of 1 Peter 1:13-2:3, how can we
make that connection in our own hearts?
4) When there’s so many who reject Christ, it can be intimidating and even cause doubts to
rise in our hearts. How does the point of difference in v. 7-8 help us think biblically about
people’s rejection of Christ?
5) What is the significance of the Apostle Peter applying Old Testament identities of believing
Israel (vv. 9-10) to the Christian Gentiles Peter wrote this letter to?
6) How has the description of the church in vv. 5, 9-10 changed your view of your own local
church?
7) Look ahead at the overarching principle (1 Pet. 2:11-12) of the next section of 1 Peter
(section is 1 Pet. 2:11-4:11). How does our spiritual position and purpose in vv. 9-10 prepare
us for that next section?
